Our first step towards realizing our vision for our experience at the Carnegie Library was to replicate the space in studio (in a very low fidelity way). This allowed us to be realistic with the spatial constraints and also gave us a better sense for the overall flow of the space and how we might tie together all of our independent interactions.
After exploring a view display options (weighing feasibility of production/ assembly/ disassembly and also aesthetic preferences), we chose to utilize wood to create simple, easel-like support structures to be able to hang our prints in a clean and relatively unobtrusive manner. So we took a long trip to Home Depot... In a Mini Cooper.
We decided on the following, easel-like support structure for hanging our prints .
After playing around with our mock space in studio, we wanted to specify what our experience would look and feel like as much as possible. Below, we created this simple floor plan and series of sketches to describe the flow through our allotted space in the library.
Without designating a super specific path through the space for visitors to follow, we did want to ensure that the experience more or less moved from front to back, starting with the map of where we sourced our objects and the introductory pedestal (with our intro video and this process book), and ending with the table top items on the desk, along with a final takeaway to really drive in the notion of challenging value.
For the next two weeks, we continued the fabrication process, building the rest of the support structures, setting up the prints with wooden rails, and printing labels for all of the objects. We also decided on incorporating a final takeaway item to help tie together the experience for visitors. Using the cash register we had found early on in our process, we designed small receipts with a few prompts and questions related to value for people to take after interacting with the various stories in our exhibition.
Lastly, we filmed our concept video in the photo studio, to show each interaction separately and explain our overarching goals with this project.
